    I’ve never heard Granholm speak. It looks like you guys have a good one up there.

      I agree. I heard her speak on the Newshour about a week or so ago and was quite impressed with her articulate intellect. Quite a contrast to another governor of the North of the same gender but different party….

    OT – but since Specter is a perennial favorite of the blog:

    We had assumed Specter’s request [to delay Eric Holder hearings] was the traditional ploy to draw things out so opponents would have more time to find dirt on the nominee.

    But then Leahy delivered a shot, implying that Specter, one of the Senate’s best-traveled members, actually wanted a schedule change to accommodate an overseas trip over the holidays.

    Leahy noted that he had asked Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to “facilitate your 14-day trip to 10 countries from December 25 through January 7.” He then asked Specter, “Please do let me know who the other Senators are who will be accompanying you.”

    Hmmm. Leahy, as Judiciary chairman, probably authorized Specter’s congressional delegation, though it’s possible he didn’t know that the “delegation” was just Specter and his wife and an aide, who are taking a military jet to Europe and the Middle East over the holidays. The itinerary includes stops in England, Israel (his 26th visit), Syria (18th) and Austria. The Austria stop is for a chat with International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei.

    Granholm will be on MTP Sunday…counterweighted by Carly Fiorina no doubt. Gregory must’ve decided to saturate with guest opiners–there’s more guest pics up at MTP than Brokaw had in the campaign, but FACE has the best “gets” overall–Levin, Sherrod Brown, Corker and Lisa Madigan. Meanwhile Snuffy dabbles in the irrelevant/obsolete with McCain.

      Granholm is of Canadian extraction, she is smart, articulate and attractive but I dont think she is going to win her next election. Engler did such a great job of fucking up Michigan’s economy for 12 years before she was elected, she gets the blame for everything that is going wrong now. Perhaps Obama ought to pay attention to this, the american electorate has a short attention span.

    I’m expecting Bush to begrudgingly announce that he’s making about $6B of the TARP Funds available to GM to get them through Jan. 6th.

    But, more important than the size of the Fix, Bush will be Made to Own His Failure of the Auto Industry, along with His Larger Failure of the Financial Sector, and even more disasterously the Greater Economy.

    So, $6B of “I’m Sorry for My Incompetent Governance” would be a Good Start on a Long Path to Redemption for the Goopers…

    She’s been driving the wingnuts batty up here in michigan since she took office. Working her butt off to do what little she’s been able to do, to do damage control on the mess that Engler left her when she took office. Of course she gets the blame when the Republican controlled state senate obstructs everything up to and including the state budget. (sound famliliar? i though it did!)

    Does anyone have any info on this “action memo” Ed Schults has been hammerin’ away on that is supposedly from Democratic leadership in the Senate to sandbag the auto bailout in order to triangulate unions right out of politics? It seems to me that those of us out here in the street need to focus on puttin the heat on the DEMOCRATS and get the fuckin leadership in the Senate shaken out completely…One Hung Harry Reid has gotta go and Chris Dodd has a lot of ’splainin’ ta do.

    KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, NOT ALL FASCISTS CALL THEMSELVES REPUBLICANS!!

      QUESTION: Mr. Gettelfinger, I know you’ve heard this before. Is there a possibility that there was a master plan that this movement was all part of an effort to oust or break the UAW, to keep them out of right-to-work states?

      GETTELFINGER: Well, I’m going to answer that question this way. I have in my hand a document that was provided to us. I’m going to say up front that the “from” was deleted from it when it was given to us and the “to.” It’s an e-mail. It was an action alert called “auto bailout.” It says, and this was Wednesday, December 10th, 2008 at 9:12 a.m..

      Today at noon, Senators Ensign, Shelby, Coburn and DeMint will hold a press conference in the Senate radio TV gallery. They would appreciate our support through messaging and attending the press conference if possible.

      The message they want us to deliver is, one, this is the Democrats’ first opportunity to pay off organized labor after the election. This is a precursor to card check and other items. Republicans should stand firm and take their first shot against organized labor instead of taking their first blow from it. Number two, this rush to judgment is the same thing that happened with the T.A.R.P. members do not have an opportunity to read or digest the legislation, and, therefore, could not understand the consequences of it.

      We should not rush to pass this because Detroit says the sky is falling. The sooner you can have press releases and documents like this in the hands of members in the press, the better. Please contact me if you need additional information. Again, the hardest thing for the Democrats to do is get 60 votes. If we can hold the Republicans, we can beat this.

      And again, I will stipulate that when I received this document, this is the way I got it. The “from” is not there, and the “to” is not there. But our sources, and you understand sources, our sources indicate to us this was put out by staffers on the Republican side of the aisle.

      There was another question that was also interesting (my emphasis):

      QUESTION: Ron, is there anything that the UAW can do to help them limp into January if they have to?

      GETTELFINGER: We did our research department if we work for nothing. You got to remember, we’re 10 percent of the labor cost. If we worked for nothing, it wouldn’t help them limp into January.

      The Plantation Caucus are simply lying pigs. (I was a bit more polite in the emails I sent to Shelby and McConnell last night)

    i so agree with everything she has said i have been saying for a long time why does it look like they are selling this country away people need to wakeup i think we really need to ask of these repubs that are against this why were they not against tax money building those buildings in the south for foreign car dealers and if we wind up with over 3 million people out on the street because of them we need to wonder why are we getting rid of all the manufacturing in this country and what cut of that money that is going to different countries over seas what cut are they getting because something smells and i think people who live in those states need to think about the other people in this country because eventually if everyone loes their job but them who is going to buy their product i would not buy a foreign car anymore

    Didn’t Sen Richard Shelby, former Chair of the Senate Banking Committee, promote the interests of ‘investors’ who would ‘grow’ the economy?

    Heckuva job, Sen Shelby…
    So far, I haven’t seen where the UAW cost American taxpayers $50 billion, but perhaps Shelby or Corker can fill me in…
